  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Drafts should be double-spaced throughout, with liberal margins, and should be about 30–35 pages, including an abstract and several key terms. Notes should be used sparingly and be assembled at the end of the text. Do not use footnote, endnote, or bibliography programs. Sources cited will be listed in a separate bibliography, and references to them in the text will appear in parenthetical form; e.g., (Benedict 1935:153). Authors may consult published issues of the journal for guidance in preparing manuscripts in ETHNOLOGY’s format.

All illustrations, graphs, charts, etc., should be rendered in a form acceptable to the publisher. If  submitted electronically, they should be provided in individual jpg or png files or in another format acceptable to the publisher, at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi, rendered in black & white or in grayscale as appropriate. If redrawing or other processing of illustrations is necessary, this work shall be done either by Author or by Editor at Author’s expense. Proofs of accepted papers will be sent to the authors, but excessive changes will be billed to them.

Nonsubscribers should also submit a nonrefundable processing fee of US$20 by check payable to University of Pittsburgh.
